I agree with you. I would rather sell Rooney for £2 million to Real Madrid than for £30 million to Chelsea.

As I said before, I'm a Millwall fan and we make a living out of selling out best players to our rivals, which is why I never questioned Manchester United selling a player to a rival. :p

I think players get an inclination of when they are not wanted at a particular club. Rooney must have guessed his days are numbered as the first choice player. The moment he started playing in a withdrawn role at Man U, he must have realized the club doesn't recognize his striking potential any more.

He still plays for England, which makes him one of the best players around. He stuck around Man U for so long, it seems improbable he will find his way out easily. I'm sure there are forces behind trying to turn him around mentally towards giving it one more try.

He definitely reacted to it in the wrong way, I don't care how talented you are a s a player NOBODY should be guaranteed a first team start, you should always be made to earn it and I suspect that is what Moyles told him and he threw a massive strop about it. I think if he stays it will take a while for the fans to get behind him again.

It's true he would go cheaper to a club outside England, but the fact is no one wants to invest big money on Rooney, he's a good player but let's face it, he hasn't been on the top of his performance.

I have just checked the stats and last season he scored 12 goals, which puts him in 13th place in the top scorer table, and is the same amount of goals as Reading's Adam Le Fondre scored! I just looked further back and it seems like he consistently has a good season and then a poor season and then repeats.

To some extent

To some extent, I agree with you. Rooney should not have agreed to a withdrawn role a while ago. He has the striking potential and robustness to be able to penetrate any defense. By continuing to play in the withdrawn position, he scores less goals.

Whether we like it or not, goals matter. If he cannot get back his potential to score goals when needed, I believe he will be the second choice.

The squad consists of players who have been with the club for quite some time. There is a definite bond between them, which is why I believe a clear understanding can be established before start of the season. I'm sure fans will welcome a goal-scoring Rooney in time.

Oh I'm sure they will, we are going through a similar thing here at Millwall, one of our players threw a massive tantrum and got himself deliberately sent off to force a transfer and now things have not happened as he wanted he has come back on a season loan and the fans were rather harsh on him, but a decent pre-season and the fans are slowly starting to forgive him. Manchester United fans are not as harsh as Millwall fans though. :)

But why is Man United so unwilling to let Rooney go when they have a number of strikers they could use? Granted Rooney was instrumental in steering the team to many victories several years back, at the moment he's merely a shadow of his former self. And to make matters worse Van P dropped in and stole the show.

IMO whether they like it or not, in the long run, Man U have to let Rooney leave the club.

We are so unwilling to let him go because, believe it or not, he is still instrumental to United. Even without playing many matches, he was our top assister and his contribution was needed. It may be argued that he is surplus to the requirements of a no.10 but undoubtedly he is one of the best no.9s in the country.

...and more. One has just to look at England's line-up to understand his worth in any team. A deliberate attempt was made to change his style of play after injury. With Van Persie performing even better this season, his role will remain to perform with assists.

His ability to score goals is vindicated. I believe he remains potent, as long as he's not targeted as the main striker. I would also like him to remain fit for the entire season and work at scoring more goals playing a withdrawn role behind Van Persie.

It is very unlikely that United would sell Rooney to a rival and for less than they paid. It has already been stated that he is to be back up for Van Persie so why would United sell. If Rooney doesn't want to play for United, then let him rot in the reserves. No-one is bigger than the club they 'play' for. No great loss to England either.

It should be taken into account that Rooney played as a midfielder for most of last season and was injured for long stretches in between. To top that he barely played games at the end of the season because of his rift with SAF.

Considering this the 12 is decent and he had few assists in there as well. It wasnt a good season for him for sure. But he surely didnt fail as badly as everyone likes to believe.
