Should Man United Be Written Off This Season?

Manchester United didn't acquire any new players (or no high-profile player) this season. Other rival teams namely: Chelsea and Man City got themselves new additions to bolster their squads.

Will this (inaction in the transfer market) hurt Man United in the long run or will the same players who helped Man United secure the title last season rise up to the challenge and prove themselves invincible again?

Well, obviously they didn't see any need to buy new players and I guess they have good reasons to think so. It is too hard to say that they maybe could be written off just because of that.

Hi Jellyfish,
The other teams, especially Chelsea, look sharper than ever and in Mourinho they have an experienced manager who knows what to do in order to win matches and once it's all over at the end of the season get that title. Man City also, once they sort out their issues may start causing mayhem left and right.

Manchester United's midfielders are not great. That's their primary weakness which they should have fixed during this transfer window but they didn't so. . .for the first half of this season I don't see them doing great.

Well if anything the 4-1 against the Swans who were suppposedly going to be a tough challenge for us might tell others that Utd. are not to be written off. Yes, we have a relatively weak midfield but we have an occasionally sturdy defence, a good goalkeeper and a couple of really hard working players.

Oh and we have the premier league's best striker.

He is a player who can still add to the team. He proved that with his contribution to Welbeck's goal and the overall play against Swansea. Not a player we should just let go of.

Seeing the result of ManU's first match I am sure the players are charged up to defend the league crown. Moyes cleared all the doubts in the first match itself.

I think Manchester is as strong as City and Chelsea and let's see what Tottenham can come up with. The first games will tell who is stronger, but when Rooney returns full-time to the team I think he can be considered a "new" player. ;)

I watched the Man-U vs Swansea game later but much. I knew the final results but just wanted to see how they played. Two things stuck out to me:

They still rely on heavily on Carrick in the midfield and at the present have no mid-fielder who can replace him which could cost them dearly if for any reason Carrick is not able to play.

#2: Man City and Chelsea also won their first matches emphatically stressing the point that they're reaching for that title.

Considering how Man United looked on the field Man City by far looked the better team but then. . .

Manchester United has the best striker in the EPL. If he doesn't get injured. . .anything could happen.

Big teams with big budgets like these three are always candidates, it can be decided on a specific moment of the season if the team can keep up at a high level or collapses, even if it is just for one game or two it can decide the title.

True enough. Which is why, before the next transfer window Manchester United's midfielders must be very careful to avoid injuries or suspensions in order for them to at least compete against their two close rivals who have deeper squads.

Today's Chelsea-United match will be a true test of where teams stand. City for all their domination of Newcastle fell to a newly promoted team yesterday. Chelsea were also not assured against Villa as they were against Hull.

United on the other hand faced a much stronger team than these two did and could still thrash Swansea 4-1. It would be foolish to underestimate a team which wins the league more than they don't.
