Ricky Lambert's dream debut

Ricky Lambert won the match for England yesterday against Scotland with his first touch of the game. Hard to find a more fairy tale debut than this. I have only watched Ricky for 1 season but he is a gifted player for sure. Great in the air, decent ball control and a penalty spot temperament to rival Le Tissier's; to top this he comes across as a down to earth player which seems like a rarity in English top flight.

That apart England for decidedly average yesterday. Cleverly and Welbeck were brilliant in flashes but not consistent during the entire match. Wilshere was good for his 45 min and the supposedly injured Rooney was visibly rusty. Hart's howler seems to get funnier the more you play it.

Your thoughts on the game?

I thought it was a bloody great match as an old school football fan, tackles were flying in and tempers were getting flared. I want to see this become a regular fixture, when was the last time you saw a "friendly" end with FOUR yellow cards and the ref giving a few players a stern talking to? I hope the rumoured return match in February goes ahead. :)

I thought Lambert looked well eager when he came on and what a beauty of a header, reminded me so much of what Andy Carroll used to do before he left Newcastle, he could have had a second as well if the post hadn't intervened! :)

I admit that I didn’t watch the match though I was aware that Scotland gave England a fright. I am really pleased that Ricky Lambert scored on his debut, winning the game. He has played well for Southampton and has risen from the lower leagues and deserved his chance. I am always impressed with Welbeck and Cleverley is improving. When Rooney tries too hard he disappoints. However, England need to get the basics right in order to have any chance of a summer in Brazil next year.

To be honest I don't think we are going to do anything unless we start changing the way we teach our children, countries like Spain, Brazil & Italy drum it into their kids at a very early age, why don't we?

What was really good to watch was Ricky Lambert did not show any signs of nervousness in his debut match. I guess his experience helped him get over the initial nerves. Coming off the bench at the age of 31 and scoring off his first touch was the highlight.
