The Pope supports soccer. It's official now. He met with Buffon and officials of the Italian squad. A friendly is due to be played between Italy and Argentina. The Pope likes his countryman Messi and other stars from both squads.

I guess he actually likes good publicity but whatever. Nothing new for politicians and other VIP to get in contact with sportsmen to be more popular.

Publicity is good in all walks of life, especially for public figures like the Pope. I believe if his acquaintance with some of the best soccer stars in the world helps them perform better and in the right frame of mind, I think he has done a great service to the game.

If others gets inspired by the publicity, I think he has done more great service to many more people than it would otherwise be possible. Football is going to last beyond all types of publicity. In the end, it's the talented players and fans like you and me who make the game what it is.

Anyone can like sports. The Pope apart from the fact that he's the head of the Roman Catholic church is just a regular guy. I don't think his public acknowledgment that he likes soccer should be considered seeking publicity. His position already gives him all the publicity he wants.

He only has to call up a press conference and he'd have his face all over the world.

But it's cool to know the Pope is a football fan.

I also feel it's great to know the Pope supports soccer. His public declaration is bound to pull in a few more fans and soccer lovers along the way.
It would be great if the Vatican were to support soccer in other countries just to encourage participation in the sport. More participation is needed at the grass-root level, and I don't think anyone else is better equipped to get the message across.

No pope like this one. Notice that he told the players they had big responsibility as role models for our society!!! :D

I agree. Any move in the direction of motivating players to think of the great game rather than just money is a good move. I'm sure players will be motivated to make the right moves in society. It's just a matter of time before more players come out in the open to offer services beyond their roles on the playing field.

The world is small is it not. There are those who were shocked at this realization. However, for me it is a realization that leaders though powerful are humans first before anything else. Furthermore, I love that the pope is humble enough to support like all us fans.

The Pope is just a normal guy like you or me and he might like soccer which is great. But, I think this was more about getting the message (peace, friendship, love) out there and soccer has a lot of fans so it is a great way to spread a message.

This is funny for me because religion is the most destructive thing that has ever happened in human history. Football connects players and countries, and religion does the opposite thing. More humans have died in the name of religion that died in all the other wars and plagues.

I think people use religion to make wars, but in this case the pope is being really smart captivating younger people by appearing with football starts, motorcycles and that kind of things.

This pope is very mediatized and it's not really something to be proud. 55% of the surveyed population of Italy said that they were contented with the fact that their pope is widely-spread throughout the world. Really, Italy?
